The protracted inaccessibility to Obama’s long form birth certificate seems to have been the ultimate disctraction, and perhaps the Democrats wanted it that way. An apparently effective distraction over the last 2 1/2 years- the mere obfuscation of Obama’s birth certificate distracted on two levels, both levels to the benefit and advantage of the Democratic Party. Firstly, the supposedly lacking long form birth certificate provided opportunity for the Democrats to create a pseudo-class, “birthers”, to counter the far more egregious “truther” lunatic fringe so closely associated with the left that it threatened to become a millstone around the neck of the Democrats if left unchallenged. The birther pseudo-class provided much needed ballast against the growing number of adherents to the notion that the events of 9/11 were planned and executed by the Bush administration. The “truther” cause was a long-standing quasi-mainstream sentiment that made its way even into government circles as was evidenced by the untimely departure of Van Jones.
What better way to counter this problem than to create an artificial controversy? Was the birther fracas nothing more than another head-fake by a very opaque Obama administration? With the liberal media on their side, it was likely to be the recipient of far more of the spotlight. With ample enough justification for concern the whole artificial controversy came unraveled when Trump called their bluff. Now the truthers- far more lunatic and far more outrageous, stand alone.
We all know the basis of this ruling was the idea that the government would force you to purchase something regardless of your wish to buy.
“What I think is appropriate is that in the same way that everybody has to get auto insurance and if you don’t, you’re subject to some penalty, that in this situation, if you have the ability to buy insurance, it’s affordable and you choose not to do so, forcing you and me and everybody else to subsidize you, you know, there’s a thousand dollar hidden tax that families all across America are — are burdened by because of the fact that people don’t have health insurance, you know, there’s nothing wrong with a penalty…”
The tired old argument may sway those in favor of public health care, but it doesn’t mean a thing in the eyes of the law.
Bake Sale Ban
The Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack assured everyone, in a Friday interview, that the bill does not mean that schools can’t have the occasional booster club bake sale or birthday parties with cupcakes. What the secretary did not mention is that power over these choices has been taken from us all. We now have permission from the government to hold a bake sale, but we’ve all seen how permission goes in school districts when federal funding comes into play. Competition for federal dollars inevitably leads to draconian measures and unreasonable policies so as not to give rise to anything that might interrupt or inhibit the flow of federal dollars.
Some of the government sanctioned foods I’ve seen at public schools lately would gag a horse. Can we expect a better job with more centralized control of lunch?
Department of Agriculture holds power to implement a bake sale ban
It’s obvious that Obama has to kick everyone’s ass since more and more people from within from General McChrystal to Rahm Emanuel who reportedly is growing tired of the idealism of Barack Obama’s inner circle. The closer we get to elections, the more obvious it appears that Obama is wearing the Emperor’s New Clothes. If McChrystal is freed to speak his mind, ie. retires from the service, will he become a darling of the right even though he voted for Obama? He certainly never was a darling of the White House. All eyes are on the election now and the timing of the DemocRats and for that matter, cozy Republicans exiting the ship will be all about keeping a low profile until finally, the panic sets in and all hands flee the CINC who is looking more and more stripped down at home and abroad.
Recap of the story:
Drudge reports that Reuters published this story on the so-called backdoor tax. As of this writing, it still appeared on Yahoo. I don’t know why Reuters pulled the story but the remnants are all over the web by now. Were the Tea Party protests of the summer more accurate than anyone knew? The noise is getting louder- higher taxes are hitting us all one way or another. The redistribution spread-the-wealth and spend-our-way-out ideology predetermines the results.

Backdoor taxes to hit middle class
By Terri Cullen –MonFeb1, 4:09pmET
NEW YORK (Reuters.com) –The Obama administration’s plan to cut more than $1 trillion from the deficit over the next decade relies heavily on so-called backdoor tax increases that will result in a bigger tax bill for middle-class families. In the 2010 budget tabled byPresident Barack Obamaon Monday, the White House wants to let billions of dollars in tax breaks expire by the end of the year — effectively a tax hike by stealth. While the administration is focusing its proposal on eliminating tax breaks for individuals who earn $250,000 a year or more, middle-class families will face a slew of these backdoor increases. The targeted tax provisions were enacted under the Bush administration’sEconomic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001. Among other things, the law loweredindividual tax rates, slashed taxes oncapital gainsand dividends, and steadily scaled back the estate tax to zero in 2010. If the provisions are allowed to expire on December 31, the top-tierpersonal income tax ratewill rise to 39.6 percent from 35 percent. But lower-income families will pay more as well: the 25 percenttax bracketwill revert back to 28 percent; the 28 percent bracket will increase to 31 percent; and the 33 percent bracket will increase to 36 percent. The special 10 percent bracket is eliminated. Investors will pay more on their earnings next year as well, with the tax on dividends jumping to 39.6 percent from 15 percent and the capital-gains tax increasing to 20 percent from 15 percent.
The estate tax is eliminated this year, but it will return in 2011 — though there has been talk about reinstating thedeath taxsooner. Millions of middle-class households already may be facing higher taxes in 2010 because Congress has failed to extend tax breaks that expired on January 1, most notably a “patch” that limited the impact of the alternative minimum tax. The AMT, initially designed to prevent the very rich from avoidingincome taxes, was never indexed for inflation. Now the tax is affecting millions of middle-income households, but lawmakers have been reluctant to repeal it because it has become a key source of revenue. Without annual legislation to renew the patch this year, the AMT could affect an estimated 25 million taxpayers with incomes as low as $33,750 (or $45,000 for joint filers). Even if the patch is extended to last year’s levels, the tax will hit American families that can hardly be considered wealthy — the AMT exemption for 2009 was $46,700 for singles and $70,950 for married couples filing jointly. Middle-class families also will find fewer tax breaks available to them in 2010 if other popular tax provisions are allowed to expire. Among them: * Taxpayers who itemize will lose the option to deduct state sales-tax payments instead of state and local income taxes; * The $250 teachertax creditfor classroom supplies; * The tax deduction for up to $4,000 ofcollege tuitionand expenses; * Individuals who don’t itemize will no longer be able to increase their standard deduction by up to $1,000 forproperty taxespaid; * The first $2,400 ofunemployment benefitsare taxable, in 2009 that amount was tax-free.
Clarification: This is an added comment, not part of the original: Trickle-down-taxation
Update: Here we are nearly a year later and we see expenses rising on food, gas and most notably, healthcare. Now some states are even considering eliminating 12th grade to save money. The times, they are a changin’. This back-door tax effect appears to be in full swing.
Update and Obamacare:
Huffington Post declared the story “vastly untrue”, of course, but then what’s that truth many Americans are already experiencing right now? While a Republican surge created a temporary stay of new tax levels, the expenses of health care, in particular, continue to rise as insurers and providers ready themselves for the new requirements of Obamacare. That’s why, despite the rhetoric about violent rhetoric and the attempted Jared Loughner effect by the hard left, the business of the 2011 congress is to maintain focus on the real issue and restrict and repeal this bill known as Obamacare that gives special powers nearly 2000 times to an administrative agency.
Is that blue pill of happiness wearing off? More Democrats are getting a taste of the reality of what we’ve been tasting all along. No blue pill of dreams for us! The voters have known for some time that the yarn spun by the far left has unraveled. (again) The ouster of the Democrats from their most holy site did not surprise anyone else as much as it did the far left. Now the Dems are starting to realize that no pill will keep truth at bay for long. The opium of campaign karma wore off six months ago and the voters sobered up way ahead of the far left. Now the shock of the red pill and its dose of reality are causing chaos in the Democrat party as the far left reels with incredulity that their precious has been cast into the fires of Mt. Doom (Lord of the Rings) and their hold on power and the drunken spell have all but vanished. Now the sane may be able to make a real change for the better.
From a July, ’09 article on WashingtonExaminer.com by David Freddoso,
“If there’s a blue pill and a red pill, and the blue pill is half the price of the red pill and works just as well, why not pay half price for the thing that’s going to make you well?” — President Obama
In last night’s press conference, President Obama seemed to be reliving that famous scene from The Matrix. The main character is offered a choice between a red pill that makes him see reality for what it is, and a blue pill that allows him to continue living in a pleasant world of illusions.

How racist is that?
That was Harry Reid. All is forgiven.
Besides, Harry Reid was quoted as saying “I am not a crook racist!”
My son, a Gulf War veteran, recently shared on Facebook:
Just saw the president’s speech in Westpoint… wow! I have never seen someone so loudly take non-responsibility for something… “wasn’t me.” If only we could wait till our soldiers are back before publicly making statements questioning the legitimacy and legality of the war while … you know, they are still fighting…
One response: what is he not taking responsibility for exactly?
I was compelled to reply: For one, he’s responsible for campaigning on Afghanistan as “the war we should be focused on” and then dithering for months on end before reaching the foregone conclusion to engage in a half hearted “slurge” but then history is full of examples of feckless leaders who stalled and succeeded. Wait- no it isn’t.
It remains to be seen whether our troops are constrained to adopt a Vietnam style policy of “contain and suppress but don’t win.”
For the Cadets who nodded off during the speech, don’t feel bad – it wasn’t exactly the Gettysburg Address.
